The Brewton City Council will add more than $36,000 to a $150,000 federal grant that will help build sidewalks
Council members voted Tuesday to pay for the design and engineering for the project. Mayor Ted Jennings said the funds could come from the cash the city has received as a result of refinancing its bond debt.
The project calls for sidewalks to be built along Douglas Avenue from Douglas Lane to Longleaf Lane and from Longleaf Lane to Old Castleberry Road.
The Safe Routes to Schools program is funding the grant.
In other business Tuesday, the council approved a resolution encouraging residents to shop locally for the Christmas season.
