Two Brewton brothers were injured Monday in a Shelby County wreck that killed a classmate of theirs at the University of Montevallo.
The multi-car wreck on U.S. 119 in Montevallo injured twins Stephen and Joseph Billy and killed Amy K. Elliott of Madison, an 18-year-old freshman at the school. Two other Montevallo students, Phenix City resident Logan Arrowood and Eonna Chambers of Birmingham, were also injured, according to the Shelby County Reporter.
Stephen Billy was released from a Birmingham hospital Tuesday, and his brother Joseph was expected to be released today. Friends said Joseph was suffering from a concussion and facial lacerations.
The incident has been turned over to the Shelby County traffic homicide task force, but no further information was available about the investigation, the Shelby County Reporter newspaper reported.
Stephen and Joseph graduated from T.R. Miller High School last spring and are the sons of Escambia County District Attorney Steve Billy and his wife Beth, the director of TRIO programs at Jefferson Davis Community College.
Amy Elliott had just visited Brewton over the weekend and was friends with several other Brewton teens, Billy family friend Vicki Fussell said. “She was just precious,” Fussell said.
First Baptist Church pastor Jack Fitts said he had been in touch with the Billy family Tuesday.
Elliott, an elementary education major at the University of Montevallo, was pronounced dead at the scene after the wreck.
The wreck happened in the northbound lane of U.S. 119 shortly before 7 p.m., and involved multiple vehicles.
Montevallo police told the Shelby County Reporter they were investigating the wreck but offered few details.
The university will hold a memorial service for Elliott at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 30 in front of Tutwiler Hall.
