One step closer|Late run earns TRM area championship

In the class 3A area 1 championship game Saturday at T.R. Miller Gymnasium, the Lady Tigers found themselves in a dogfight for the whole first half and midway through the third quarter.
The Lady Tigers led 10-6 after the first quarter and 21-14 at halftime before having their lead cut to two points with 2:59 left to play in the third quarter.
From that point on, the Lady Tigers outscored the Bayside Academy Lady Admirals 37-10 to claim the area championship with a 65-36 win.
T.R. Miller outscored Bayside Academy 8-0 to end the third quarter with a 10-point lead, 36-26, heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Tigers outscored Bayside Academy 29-10 as they used a 23-0 run in the quarter after extending their 8-0 run to a 10-0 run to start the quarter.
Nakiya Smith led the Lady Tigers in the game as she scored 23 points and was followed by Leah Brundidge with 13 points and Keydra Shedrone with 11 points.
Desiree Gibbs added eight points and Courtney Jones had six points.
Shay Kiser and Elizabeth Reed both had two points each in the win for the Lady Tigers.
The Lady Tigers would outscore Bayside Academy 44-22 in the second half.
T.R. Miller shot 8-of-12 from the free throw line in the game while Bayside shot 10-of-14.
T.R. Miller will play Calhoun, who lost to Central of Hayneville 49-41, Thursday in the sub region round at home at 6 p.m.
Bayside Academy will play Central of Hayneville.
Admission will be $6, which is set by the AHSAA.
If the Lady Tigers win Thursday in the sub-regional round of the playoffs, they will advance to the South regional that will be played in Mobile at the University of South Alabama.
The Lady Tigers would take on the winner of (area 4 runner-up) Dale County against (area 2 winner) Slocomb, Thursday, Feb. 18 at 6 p.m.

The T.R. Miller Tiger boys basketball team ended their season Friday night in Butler at Choctaw County in the area tournament with a 91-48 loss to finish winless.
The loss ended the season for the Tigers of Brewton with an 0-21 record.
T.R. Miller was outscored 20-9 in the first quarter and 25-13 in the second quarter to trail 45-22 at halftime.
In the second half, the Tigers of Choctaw County in Butler held a 20-13 advantage in the third quarter to extend their lead to 65-35 heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, Choctaw County ended the game with a 26-13 run to win by 43 points.
Terez Lane led with 15 points and Derrick Riley added 13 points in the loss.
Wes Dickey chipped in seven points in the loss for the Tigers.
T.R. Miller shot 17-of-23 from the free throw line in the area tournament loss while Choctaw County shot 6-of-15 from the line.
