Mrs. Sonja Henie Gantt Grace, 60, died April 7, 2010, after an extended illness. She was a native of Escambia County. She was a graduate of Southern Normal School and attended Jefferson Davis Junior College. She was an active member of the Greenstreet A.M.E. Zion Church, serving in many areas, and she was employed at the Conecuh County Board of Registrars.
She was preceded in death by her father, Samuel T. Gantt, and her brother, Kim Gantt.
She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Johnny McFero Grace Jr.; three children, Rita Grace Nettles, Johnny (Charlene) Grace III, and Monica (Lacedric) Mitchell, all of Evergreen; eight grandchildren, Amanda, William, McFero, Ryan, Gracelyn, Yasmin, Rance and Chandler; her mother, Mattie Gantt; her father-in-law, J.M. Grace; seven siblings, Yolandra Gantt, Tren (Glenda) Gantt, and Kearnest (Patricia) Gantt, all of Brewton, Keith (Connie) Gantt and Gheta (Ralph) Grace, both of Evergreen, Roderick (Deborah) Gantt of Prattville, and Anita Gantt of Pensacola, Fla.; several nieces, nephews and other family members; two godchildren, Sedrick Grace and Brittany McPherson; and a devoted coworker, Paula Brock.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 10, at 3 p.m. at Greenstreet A.M.E. Zion Church in Evergreen with the Rev. Frank Grace officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery with Presley-Fluker Funeral Home directing.
