Jean Bronson Gillis Burson

Mrs. Jean Bronson Gillis Burson, 89, died July 16, 2010, at her resident after an extended illness. She was a native of Auburn and grew up in Brewton.

She attended nursing school at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Montgomery, and joined the Army Nursing Corps. She was awarded the battle award for her service to the country at the Battle of the Bulge and was a captain with the 185th General Hospital. She grew up in the Presbyterian Church in Brewton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Virginia Gillis Grand and Patricia Gillis Cooper and her brother, James Gordon Gillis.

She is survived by husband, Dr. Elkanah George Burson; her children, Sharman Jean Burson (Joel) Ramsey, Dr. Sylvia Jane Burson (Thomas) Rushing; Elkanah George Burson III (Debbie Buford Burson); her grandchildren, Cecily Cathryn Ramsey (Stephen) Butterworth, Bethany Brooke Ramsey (Michael) Evans, Andrew Allen Ramsey (his fiance, Brittany Ballard), Hannah Elizabeth Jean Burson, Rebecca Jewel Burson, Mallory Martha Jane Burson and Mary Elle Burson; her great-grandchild, Lily Clare Butterworth; a sister, Sylvia Gillis (Henry) Snow; her nieces and nephews, Clair Cooper Sanborn, Martha Dawn Cooper Singleton, Margaret Jane Cooper Boatwright, George Louis Cooper, Patrick Gillis, Linda Gillis Zierkelbach, April Grand Byrd, Frank Grand, and Georgianna Grand.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, July 17, at 2 p.m. at Palmer Cemetery in Furman.

After the service her family and friends will receive friends and family at Wakefield Plantation in Furman.
