Brewton City Board of Education approved a dual enrollment agreement with Coastal Alabama Community College for high school students to enroll in college courses.

“All students are responsible for their own transportation,” Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Varner said.

To be eligible:

• The student must be in grade 10, 11, or 12 or have an exception granted by the college upon the recommendation of the student’s principal and superintendent, or their respective designees, and in accordance with Alabama Administrative code.

• The student must have written approval of the appropriate principal and the guidance counselor of their designees. Student success in dual enrollment/dual credit is dependent upon both academic readiness and social maturity. Approval from the principal and counselor indicates that the student has demonstrated both.

• Students seeking enrollment in academic dual enrollment for dual credit coursework must have a minimum cumulative (unweighted) high school grade point average 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. Students seeking enrollment in non-health related technical dual enrollment for dual credit coursework must have a minimum cumulative (unweighted) high school grade point average 2.0 on a 4.0 scale (health related technical dual enrollment requires a 2.5 grade point average or higher).

“I expect most kids to take advantage of this opportunity, and we average at least four to five students who participate in the dual enrollment plan,” principal Ron Snell said.

All dually enrolled students must take a state-approved college placement test as well. Students registering for English must have a subset score of 18 and for math a score of 20 on the ACT or equivalent score on other college entrance exams. Students in the 10 to 11 grade can register only for career and technical courses and take a state-approved placement test but are not required to do so. However, the college must ensure that all students take a state-approved college placement test prior to registering for dual enrollment courses for the 12-grade year.

Post-secondary courses for dual credit shall be posted on both the high school and college transcripts.

The financial arrangements are as follows for Career Technical Dual Enrollment:

The college will invoice the Governor’s office of workforce development for tuition, fees, and textbook charges related to career technical dual enrollment.

The LEA will invoice the college for the use of facilities and materials and supplies, if applicable.

The student is responsible for the tuition, fees, and textbooks charges related to academic dual enrollment.

Students concurrently enrolled in career technical dual enrollment may take an academic course within the associate of applied science degree plan for their program. Acceptable courses include English, math or science. Students must meet placement requirements for English and math.
