Residents at the nursing home and assisted living facilities received a special treat for Mother’s Day thanks to Comfort Care Hospice.
“A lot of families haven’t seen their loved ones in the nursing homes or assisted livings in almost 2 months or more,” said Volunteer Coordinator Susan Rhodes.
With this reality in mind, Rhodes and the staff were puzzled by how they could reach out for the holiday amid the pandemic. Questions like, “Would residents get to see them (loved ones) for Mother’s Day?” or “What would the restrictions be?” flooded their minds as they concocted a plan to make a difference.
The initial thought was cards. “Not knowing day-to-day what the government is going to say as far as access to them. I thought lets do Mother’s Day cards for them,” shared Rhodes. Announcing on Facebook and other media outlets, the nonprofit placed a bin outside the office for the cards to be picked up and dropped off.
“We’ve had people turn in cards and pick up packs, I have refilled the bin twice this week,” said Rhodes.
Adding to the cards, the staff wanted to do a little more.
“We usually do a Mother’s Day tea where their families can come,” said Rhodes. Explaining the event, Rhodes said that residents of West Gate Nursing Facility and families look forward to the event every year. Due to social distancing and the no visitor rule because of the coronavirus, the tea could not take place. Brainstorming with other members of the staff, the group decided to deliver a balloon along with a card to the residents at West Gate Nursing Facility.
“We’re going to the nursing home today, and I have a few student volunteers that will help me. We are not getting to go in, but we’re taking the cards and we’ve got every mother at WestGate a Mylar balloon that is a flower that says, ‘Happy Mother’s Day,’ and they are going to get a card,” she explained. “It is just a way to honor them,” she added.
Residents at Country Place Senior Living and The Meadows received a special gift as well.
“We are also are doing pedicure baskets for Country Place Senior Living and the Meadows. We’re going to take them pedicures and cards,” said Rhodes.
Honoring the mothers at all facilities, the staff wanted to reach out to all mothers missing loved ones during this difficult time.
“That is a very big day for me personally, and I just thought how many mothers are in that nursing home that may not be able to be with their kids on mother’s day? You don’t want to forget them,” said Rhodes.
All in all, Rhodes and the staff greatly appreciated the positive response from the community for all projects they conduct. She said, “We’ve had a really good response. Brewton never disappoints on something like this. They have always been great to help us.”
