Helen Marie Childress King

Flomaton

 

Helen Marie Childress King, 75, of Hwy. 31 of Flomaton, passed away Sun., Aug. 21, 2016, in a Jay, Fla., medical facility after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held today, Aug. 24, at 2 p.m. at Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Berry officiating.

Interment will follow in Pollard Cemetery at Pollard, with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home officiating.

She was a native of Foley, and a life long resident of Flomaton. She was a member of the Lambeth-Boutwell Church and a retired machine operator with the Brewton Weaving Company.

She is survived by her husband, Shelby King of Flomaton; a brother, Aubrey (Kitty) Childress of Flomaton; two sisters, Jean Odom and Maxine Childress, both of Flomaton; nieces and nephews, Eunice, John, Jason, Lee, David and Tammy; and a number of great nieces and nephews

She was preceded in death by her parents, David Allen and Daisy Moye Childress; a brother, Millard Childress; and a niece, Sandy.

Richard Winston Fuqua

Brewton

 

Richard Winston Fuqua, 74, of Raintree Road, Bethel Community, Brewton, passed away Aug. 16, 2016 unexpectedly.

Funeral services are were held Sat., Aug. 20, at 11 a.m. at the Bethel Mennonite Church with the Rev. John Kemp and the Rev. Woody Jackson officiating. Interment followed in Bethel Mennonite Church Cemetery Brewton, with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing.

Active pallbearers were Tommy Barrentine, Rodney Ashworth, Randy Ashworth, Glenn Fuqua, Arlan Shelly and Leonard Fuqua. Honorary pallbearers were Gary Fuqua, Danny Fuqua, Austin Ashworth, Darrell Coleman and Wayne Dykes.

He was a native of Brewton, and a former resident of Pascagula, Miss., before moving back to Brewton. He was a member of the Bethel Mennonite Church, a 1960 graduate of W.S. Neal High School, a U.S. Army veteran having served two tours in Vietnam, and retiree from the pulp mill at International Paper Company in Pascagula, Miss. with more than 30 years of service. He enjoyed gardening.

He is survived by his brother, Joe (Gladys) Fuqua of Brewton; two sisters, Barbara Ashworth of Milton, Fla. and Peggy Tolbert of Pace, Fla.; nephews and nieces, Glenn (Carol) Fuqua, Sonya Hadaway, Rodney (Jennifer) Ashworth, Randy (Ronja) Ashworth, Cynthia (Ryan) Stokes and Tonya (Brett) Plant.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fern Randolph and Mamie Haveard Fuqua; and a son, Richard William Fuqua.

Paul Edward Ashcraft

Coolidge, Ga.

 

Paul Edward Ashcraft, 76, of Coolidge, Ga., passed away Aug. 20, 2016, at his residence.

The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. Thurs., Aug. 25, at Allen and Allen Funeral Home in Thomasville, Ga.

He was born April 24, 1940 in Pensacola, Fla., the son of the late Jay and Edna Dulaney Ashcraft. He was married to Joyce Ann Knotts Ashcraft, who preceded him in death. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was retired from AT&T after 35 years of service. He was a very caring and giving father who was always there when you needed him and was a big jokester.

He is survived by his son, Jeff Ashcraft and wife, Emerald of Coolidge; grandchildren, Liberty Ashcraft, Ian Ashcraft and Ethan Ashcraft; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Ashcraft.

Billy Ray Gatwood

Brewton

 

Billy Ray Gatwood, 76,  passed away on Tues., Aug. 16, 2016 at his Brewton residence.

Funeral services were held Thurs., Aug. 18, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 18, from the chapel of Craver’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Eddie Hammac and Bro. J. Heath Wilson officiating. Interment followed in Beulah Cemetery.

He was born in Pollard, and had been a resident of Brewton for the past 15 years, coming from Illinois. He worked as an iron worker at an iron foundry for a number of years. He was a member of Beulah Holiness Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bruce E. Gatwood and Allie Mae Congleton Gatwood; a son, Billy Joe Gatwood; a grandson, Nicholas Roger Winters; and his first wife, Betty Jo Gatwood.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah Gatwood of Brewton; a son, Christopher (Amy) Gatwood of Rolling Meadows, Ill.; step-sons Peter Hough of Biloxi, Miss. and William Moellenbrink of Brewton; three daughters, Melinda (Chris) Flaxman of Brewton, Kim (Roger) Winters of N. Manchester, Ind., and Lori Gatwood of Phoenix, Ariz.; two brothers, Doug Gatwood of Brewton, and Charles (Julie) Gatwood of S. Barrington, Ill.; first cousin, Doris Law of Pensacola, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Christopher Flaxman, Will Winters, Betty Jo Gatwood, Max Moellenbrink, Tyler Moellenbrink, Austin Gatwood and Ava Gatwood.

James Lamar Porter

Brewton

 

James Lamar Porter, 60, died Tues. Aug. 16, 2016, in Pensacola, Fla.

Funeral services were held Mon., Aug. 22, at 11 a.m. at Presley-Fluker Funeral Chapel in Brewton, with the Rev. Dr. Forest Lett officiating. Burial followed at Pine Grove Cemetery with Presley-Fluker Funeral Home directing.

He was the fourth child born to Mack Henry and Jeffie Lee Porter, April 5, 1956 in Escambia County, Ala. He attended W.S. Neal High School and Saint Mark Baptist Church. Most of his work was in the oil fields. He was a great lover of gardening, fishing and hunting. He often supplied the neighbors with fresh vegetables.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Sherry Denise Hendrieth; a sister, Joyce Ann Thomas and a brother, Stevenson Porter.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Cheryl Ann Porter; two sons, Kerry (Kimberly) Hendrieth of Mobile and Kevin Dynel Hendrierh of Brewton; a brother, Johnny (Earnestine) Porter of Syracuse, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Traa, Deja (Jeleel), Jaden and Kadeja; two great-grandchildren, Aubrei and Kylie; sisters-in-law, Marilyn Louise (Ollie) Smith and Linda Faye (David) Crook; brothers-in-lawk, Johnny Ray Hendrieth of Pritchard and Kenneth Hendrieth of Brewton; an aunt, Edna Jones; an uncle, Mark Henrieth and a host of other relatives and friends.

 

Betty Morris Reaves

Flomaton

 

Betty Morris Reaves, 76, of Flomaton, passed away on Mon., Aug. 22, 2016, at Convenant Hospice in Pensacola, Fla., of several health complications.

Visitation will be held on today, Aug. 24, at Flomaton Funeral Home Chapel from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. service time with the Rev. Ronnie Champion officiating.

Interment will follow in Flomaton Cemetery in Flomaton.

She was born on May 24, 1940 at the family home in Morristown, Fla., and was a graduate of Jay High School in Jay, Fla.  She was a retired operator at Bell Telephone Company in Flomaton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dutch and Bertha Lee Morris of Jay.

She leaves to mourn her passing her husband of 59 years, William T. Reaves; four children, Burton (Debora) Reaves, Steven (Tammy) Reaves, Keith Reaves and Matthew (Heather) Reaves, all of Flomaton, AL; affectionately known as Nannie to nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; brother, Ray (Nell) Morris of Pace, Fla.; sister, Lorene (Scott) Whatley of Milton, Fla.; and numerous close friends.
