With the conclusion of the 2007 Alabama high school football season Saturday and the final state championship games being played, let the talk about next year begin.
On Saturday, the Super 6 state championship games ended with three new state champions and three repeat state champions.
Classes 3A, 4A and 5A all saw new champs in Cordova, Central of Tuscaloosa and St. Paul's. Classes 1A, 2A, and 6A all had repeats as Sweet Water, Leroy and Prattville all won for the second year in a row.
While the champions were crowned, the southern part of the state (or southern teams in the bracket) boasted of a 6-0 sweep over the northern-bracket teams.
Some may argue that the south went 4-2, with Cordova and Central Tuscaloosa winning and them being in the north.
While this may be true because of location, because of regional alignments, all Super 6 winners competed in the southern half of their respective classifications.
No one can truly say where the northern half of the state meets the southern half to designate north and south, but teams in regions one through four are technically southern and regions five through eight are northern teams.
What is funny is in the 3A classification, is Cordova was competing in the south division in region four and Clay County was in region five competing in the north.
What's funny about that is that Cordova is the northern most city.
All state champions remain in the current classifications for the 2008 football season except Central of Tuscaloosa who will be moving up to class 5A and will be in the northern bracket.
While on the subject of Super 6, I found some interesting records:
Hazlewood holds the record for most state championships with 11.
Hazlewood also holds the record for most consecutive with five and the record for most state championship game appearances with 14.
T.R. Miller is third with 11. That ties them with Hoover.
Hazlewood also holds the record for most playoff wins with 82 from 1970-2007 as T.R. Miller has 75 from 1969-2007.
The record for most playoff appearances belongs to Colbert County with 32 from 1967-2007 as T.R. Miller has 28 from 1969-2007.
One record that is not directly related to the Super 6 is most consecutive games scored belonging to T.R. Miller with 268 from 1988-2007. Hoover is the closest team next to the Tigers with 212 from 1991-2007 as both streaks are current.
T.R. Miller's last game that they did not score in was in 1987 when they lost 10-0 to Lanett in the second round of the playoffs.
I want to wish all area teams the best of luck this week and invite all the fans to the Escambia County basketball tournament at W.S. Neal High School.
The tournament starts on Thursday and will conclude on Saturday.
