Sunday’s storms brought downed trees and powerlines to the Bethel community. EMA Director David Adams said that the first calls come in to the sheriff’s department shortly before 2 p.m. “There were several trees and powerlines down,” she said. “There were a couple of homes with reported damage and several outbuildings or sheds damaged or destroyed. I have had no injuries reported to me.” Adams reminded residents that Escambia County does not have or operate any weather sirens. “The city of Atmore and the Poarch Creek Indian Tribe both have and operate sirens in their respective areas,” he said. “The city of Brewton did apply for a grant recently to install sirens in the Brewton area, but the application was not awarded. Many counties are getting away from the use of sirens, both new installs and removing existing sirens.” Adams said that reasons behind this is the high cost of installing and maintaining them. “We now have many alerting systems available to us that work both inside and outside that use new technology and are much more cost effective. Siren are only meant to be an outdoor warning system.”
