A peaceful protest occurred Sun., May 31, in downtown Brewton. Following the death of George Floyd, protests have occurred around the country throughout the week. After seeing other demonstrations, Brewton resident Caneshia Redfearn wanted to participate. “I was thinking about everything going on around the country,” said Redfearn.
“I saw they were going to do a protest in Mobile and I told my friends I was going to go. I sat there and thought no this happens in my hometown. Lets start in Brewton,” she continued.
Getting the supplies together, Redfearn contacted others in town. “We got posters, water, Gatorade, and I told them (friends) I was going to do this. It started with 3 of us,” said Redfearn.
Beginning that afternoon on the corner of HWY 31 and HWY 41 by the city message center, the event grew in number. Beginning with 3 individuals, according to Redfearn by the end, 30 to 40 people were gathered together. Mayor Yank Lovelace and Rev. H.K. Matthews attended the event as well.
“The out pour of encouragement was great,” said Redfearn. “Having Rev. H.K. Matthews there was historical,” she added.
With plans to continue meeting throughout the week, Redfearn thanked everyone that participated. “I have to thank Wanda Alexander and Erin Brown. Also, I would like to thank everybody for the encouraging words and the hugs of support.”
