That is the famous quote from former legendary University of Alabama head football coach Paul “Bear” Bryant.
I know not all the readers out there reading this may be Alabama fans, but this quote seemed to describe the 13-year-old Brewton Babe Ruth All Star team after their district win over Monroe County Monday night in Evergreen.
It may have not been the greatest comeback in sports history, but it was a comeback and it was great.
After falling into the losers bracket on Saturday with a 15-13 loss to Monroe County, the 13-year-old Brewton Babe Ruth All Stars defeated Atmore 7-3 to force another game with Monroe County and hopefully a third game with them also.
The Brewton team came out on fire in both games and as head coach David Maddox said after the game showed heart and played with everything they had.
After totally crushing host Evergreen 22-1 in the opening round, Monroe County beat Brewton 15-13 in the winners bracket to send Brewton into the losers bracket.
From there, the team beat Atmore and Monroe County twice to take the tourney and district championships.
I want to personally congratulate head coach David Maddox and his assistants Steve Blackmon and Dwight Maloy and the 13-year-old Brewton Babe Ruth team on their great accomplishment.
Players Sam Smith, Brett Smith, Wes Maddox, Hunter Mullins, Dalton Evans, Cam Blackman, Caleb Stewart, Josh Maloy, Cody Smith, Ryan Hunt, Jacob Fillmore, Tyler Dehoff, William Whittle, and Jeremy Myers all did great jobs and contributed in the championship.
From now, the team will head to state competition in Andalusia on July 19 at 1 p.m.
Congrats again guys for this big win.
On a different note, I want to invite all fans out to the ballpark as we still have tournaments going on.
In Little League, thanks to Mother Nature and her rain, the 9-and-10-year-old tournament is still going on with the 10-and-11 group starting yesterday also in East Brewton.
The 11-and-12 group will be on Saturday in Brewton and the 14-year-old Babe Ruth tournament will be on Thursday in Monroeville at 6 p.m.
