Promise comes on breeze

I got a promise from God Thursday evening in my back yard. It's a promise I really needed to get after the day I had on Thursday. The promise was that of fall.
If you can remember what your week was like, you'll probably remember that Thursday was a scorcher as far as the temperature goes.
On Thursday, I had quite a busy day and experienced that sensation of fluid trickling down the middle of my back on at least two occasions.
I'm not complaining. I love my job; and I enjoyed every sweat-drenched moment of my day on Thursday.
The day started out with a trip to the practice field at W.S. Neal High School to see the band working through routines during their annual band camp. I was there to take pictures for a special page to run in The Brewton Standard. In my attempts to be a fair reporter, I stayed for a while making sure to get pictures of band members, color guard, majorettes and drum major. It took a while since the band was rehearsing and started and stopped several times to address some issues with marching and spacing. As a former band member, I understood and patiently waited to get a good shot.
After spending time on the practice field, my day called me away to another photo opportunity that again found me working up a sweat. The short trip from W.S. Neal High School over to the Brewton Fire Department, didn't give my van's air conditioning ample time to dry the wet spots in my clothes. So, the sweating continued.
I didn't mind the wait at my second stop. I enjoyed talking with some people that I don't usually get a chance to speak to on a regular basis. The heat was pretty intense, especially since I had just spent an hour without sunscreen on the practice field.
Later in the day, I took a trip to the YMCA to take a couple of photos and get information on a story there. It was perfectly pleasant in the building. I made my way through the building to the pool area where I was to take some photos. No problem. Being around that water and getting a little wet by a diver kept me pretty cool. The problem, and the sweat, came when I realized I had gone through a “no re-entry” door to the main building. That mistake cost me some additional sweat for the day since I had to walk uphill and around the length of the building just to get back to where I had parked.
Finally, now, I'll get to the promise I was given.
When I got home from work, I realized the garbage can in the kitchen wasn't going to empty itself and began to work at getting it out to the bigger can in the back yard. After dropping a nearly exploding bag of garbage into the container, a nice, cool breeze came through our yard.
I stood there quietly with my eyes closed and my head tilted back taking in the coolness of the breeze. It might not have been as cool as I imagined it to be, but that breeze whispered a promise to me that cooler weather is coming.
I've said many times that fall is my favorite season of the year. The season brings a change in the weather that is a wonderful relief from high temperatures and high humidity. It also brings football, the smell of crayons, school bells and lightning bugs.
It also tells me that Halloween, Thanksgiving and even Christmas aren't that far away.
Yes, I got a promise on Thursday and I can hardly wait for that promise to be fulfilled.
