Brewton officials are reviewing the city's drainage situation after flash flooding on Wednesday left some downtown businesses mopping floors and pulling up carpet.
Hart's office, located at 212 Belleville Ave., had no carpeting on the floor Wednesday as Hart worked in his office.
Officials estimated four inches of rain fell in just a matter of hours in the Brewton area early Wednesday morning. The heavy rain was more than the drainage system in the downtown area could handle in such a short amount of time, Brewton Mayor Ted Jennings said.
The downtown flooding wasn't the only situation being reviewed by city officials, Jennings said.
Downtown business owner Perri McMillan was asleep early Wednesday morning when Sheriff Grover Smith came to her house to let her know about the situation. Workers at her McMillan Wingate shop were cleaning up that afternoon.
McMillan said she appreciated the notice from Smith.
Attorney Broox Garrett said his office had water cover about a portion of his office floor during the flash flood Wednesday.
Garrett said the office had some large rugs that were being dried out and other steps were being taken to protect flooring.
Garrett said downtown flooding has been a problem many times over the years, but the city's installation several years ago of a six-foot drain helped the situation.
