The baseball game for the W.S. Neal Eagles against the UMS-Wright Bulldogs was a game of mixed emotions.
The Eagles trailed early in the game, rallied in the game, fell behind again and cut the lead to two. Then, it just all fell apart as UMS-Wright ended the season for the Eagles Thursday at home with a 22-8 win over W.S. Neal.
The loss dropped W.S. Neal and ended their season with a record of 10-9.
The Eagles fell behind early in the game 5-0 as UMS-Wright scored one run in the top of the first inning and four in the top of the second inning.
The Eagles cut the lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the third inning after holding UMS scoreless while scoring four runs in the bottom of the third inning.
With the lead cut to one, UMS scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 7-4 lead before the Eagles tied the game at 7-7 with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
UMS added three runs in the fifth inning to grab a 10-7, but W.S. Neal’s William Shell homered for the Eagles to cut the lead to 10-8.
That would be the last run of the game for the Eagles of W.S. Neal as UMS added 12 runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 22-8 lead. W.S. Neal fell in six innings.
UMS’s leadoff batter was 5-for-6 with 12 RBIs and three straight homeruns—a solo, a three-run and a grand slam.
The Eagles used five pitchers in the loss with Keith Bradley taking the loss in relief of starting pitcher William Shell.
Shell started the game and allowed seven runs on seven hits in four innings, struck out five, walked two and hit four.
Bradley came in relief in the top of the fifth inning and allowed six hits, eight runs and hit two.
Brian Settle relieved Bradley in the top of the sixth inning with the bases loaded and allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits, and struck out one in 1/3 of an inning.
Hayden Cooper went 1/3 of an inning in the sixth inning and allowed four runs on six hits, and struck out four.
Christian Purvis closed the game with 1/3 of an inning and struck out one.
Reid Johnson was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Jake Cannon was also 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Shell was 3-for-3 with a single, double and a homerun and three RBIs. Logan Williamson was 1-for-1 for the Eagles in the loss.
Cannon doubled to cut the lead to 5-2 and Shell singled and scored two to cut the lead to 5-4 in the third inning.
Johnson’s double tied the game at 7-7 in the fourth inning and Shell’s homerun in the fifth inning cut the lead to 10-8.
W.S. Neal and UMS-Wright played in Mobile on Wednesday. That game ended when as UMS-Wright dropped the Eagles to 10-8 with a 13-0 win.
W.S. Neal had no hits in the loss.
