Thanks to good pitching, solid defense and a hitting attack that has kept the pressure on, the Brewton 9-10 all-stars carved their way to the winners’ bracket final of the District 5 baseball tournament in Opp.
In doing so, the Brewton squad defeated Evergreen 15-0 Saturday, before upending Opp, 8-3, Sunday.
In winning their opener, four pitchers combined for a no-hitter; in the second win, it took a brilliant pitching performance, great defense and an offense that applied the pressure on Opp and never let up.
While taking Monday off, Brewton was to play Covington County Tuesday night with the winner earning the right to play for the district championship Thursday and a berth in the state tournament, which is to be played in Mobile in two weeks.
If Brewton won Tuesday, they will play at 7 p.m. on Thursday and if they lost, they will play at 7 p.m. tonight.
Brewton 15, Evergreen 0
Plenty of runs and good pitching: That was the combination that the Brewton Little League 9- and 10-year-old All Stars used to claim a 15-0 win in the opening round of their tournament in Opp Saturday.
Four Brewton pitchers teamed up to throw a combined no-hitter as Brewton scored six runs in the first inning and added five more in the third inning to defeat Evergreen in a four inning game due to the 10-run rule.
In the win Saturday over Evergreen Hunter Brittain, Drew Williamson, Joshua Winton, and Garrett Salter combined for the no-hitter with Brittain picking up the win.
Brittain went 2/3 of an inning and allowed no runs on no hits and walked one.
Williamson went one inning and allowed no runs, one walk and struck out three.
Winton went one inning and hit one and struck out three and Salter went 1 1/3 inning and struck out two.
Brewton batted around in the first inning and scored six runs to take an early 6-0 lead.
Brewton added one run in the second inning followed by five in the third inning and three in the fourth inning.
Williamson was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Jordan Williams was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs.
Brittain was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs and Lane Clark was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
O’Neil White was 1-for-3 in the win for the Brewton All Stars.
While the offense was pounding out 11 hits, Hunter Brittain kept Opp’s offense at bay by allowing just one hit and striking out eight over 3 2/3 innings of work as Brewton defeated Opp 8-3 Sunday night in Opp.
Drew Williamson and Lane Clark came on in relief and all three pitchers benefited from a terrific defensive effort.
Both teams went down quietly in the first inning, before Brewton drew first blood with a three-run second inning.
It was a lead Brewton would never relinquish, as it scored in every inning the rest of the way.
Brittain started the inning with a leadoff walk and was followed by a single from Jordan Williams, who is 7-for-7 in two games at the plate. Throw in three walks and Williams has reached base every time he has come up to the plate in the tournament.
With runners on first and second, Joshua Winton loaded the bases by reaching on an error when the second baseman couldn’t handle the hard-hit grounder.  
With no outs, Opp got a strikeout and a fielder’s choice and looked poised to strand all three runners on base, but Tyler Baxter coaxed a walk that scored Brittain before leadoff hitter Drew Williamson slapped a two-run single to right field to make it 3-0.
Brewton added a run to its lead in the third when Troy Lewis led off with a walk, went to third on a double by Williams, and then scored when he tagged up on Brittain’s fly ball to centerfield.
When Opp scored in the third to make it 4-1, Brewton countered with a run in the fourth and two in the fifth, as both Caleb Winton and Williamson had RBI hits in the inning to make it 7-1.
Opp countered with two runs in the fifth to make it 7-3 and had bases loaded, poising themselves to make a late run. Cutter Gafford doubled and scored on Tanner McCurley’s single.
Williamson then struck out the next two batters before Taylor McCurley walked, former Brewton resident Peyton Whigham reached on an error and Talon Flowers singled to score Taylor McCurley.
With bases loaded, Lane Clark got a one-hopper back to him to record the final out of the inning.
With the score now 7-3 going to the sixth, Lewis, Brittain and Williams led off with back-to-back singles to load the bases with no outs before Joshua Winton’s RBI single extended the lead to 8-3.
In its last chance, Opp had runners on first and second but couldn’t get them in as Tyler Baxter made a great catch in right field for the first out before Brittain and Joshua Winton took ground balls and threw to first to record the final two outs, stranding the Opp runners and moving on to meet Covington County.
Williams led the Brewton offense with a 4-for-4 performance, including a double and scored twice. Williamson followed with two hits, while Lewis, Brittain, Caleb Winton and Joshua Winton all had RBI singles.
