An East Brewton man is behind bars after being arrested for terrorist threats by officers with the Brewton Police Department.
Matthew Powell, 31, of 103 Parker St., in East Brewton was arrested Tuesday after officers received information leading them to the suspect.
Sgt. Steven Ferguson with Brewton Police said an investigation had been conducted into threatening calls made recently to the Brewton Walmart Supercenter.
Ferguson said investigators studied the records and found one number believed to be responsible for the calls.
Ferguson said Powell was arrested and charged with making terrorist threats, which is a class C felony. Powell was transported to the Escambia County Detention Center where he will appear at a bond setting today.
The incident began  Feb. 17 when employees at the Walmart Supercenter on Douglas Avenue reported  the threatening calls to Brewton police officers.
Employees at Walmart called police around 5:15 a.m. Feb. 17, saying a man had phoned from a vehicle in the parking lot asking for money, police have said. The man told employees to bring him a certain amount of money or he would rob them.
The man placed a second call to the store continuing to demand money, reports said.
Officers involved in the investigation and arrest were Lt. Eric Suarez, Sgt. Hal Parker, Ferguson and Chief Monte McGougin.
