‘Pink Pirates’ fight cancer

A group of Brewton area residents are joining forces to form a band of “Pink Pirates.” The group is headed up by Sharon Peacock, who served as chairman for the 2010 Relay for Life event held in May to benefit the American Cancer Society.

Peacock, along with other members of the group, will be making a trip to Mobile in October to participate in an event to raise funds and awareness of breast cancer.

“We are trying to raise $5,000 for the American Cancer Society’s ‘Making Strides for Breast Cancer’ event,” Peacock said. “We are going to plan a pirate’s ball in early August for our fundraiser.”

Peacock said the fundraising is just one way to be involved in such a worthwhile cause.

“On October 30 we will join women from Mobile, Baldwin, and Escambia County for the 5K walk,” Peacock said. “The walk will be held in Mobile.”

Although participating in the actual event is a bonus, Peacock said fundraising is just as important as walking in the event.

“You don’t have to go to Mobile to walk to be a member of the group,” Peacock said. “We would be happy to have people join us to help raise funds to meet our goal of $5,000.”

Peacock has organized a meeting for those who are interested in finding out more about the Mobile event or other events to benefit the American Cancer Society.

“We are planning a meeting Monday, June 21 at 11 a.m. at The Oaks Cafe,” Peacock said. “Anyone interested in being a member of the ‘Pink Pirates’ can come to the meeting to learn more about the fundraising projects and the events planned.”

Peacock said currently there are 10 members signed up for the group. Additional team members are welcome.
