To the editor:
Recently your local American Red Cross had the opportunity to speak to two groups regarding volunteer opportunities and chapter services.
In October we were delighted to speak to the youth involved in the Upward Bound program. Rebekah Martin, an Upward Bound alumnus and a local chapter volunteer, spoke about various opportunities for youth volunteers. She also spoke about Alabama Red Cross Youth Institute, held the first week of June at the University of Montevallo. Having attended the Leadership Institute for the past three years, she could enthusiastically give them first-hand information. Marcus Folmar, a chapter volunteer, also spoke about his time as an institute delegate. There were more than 40 youth in attendance.
Earlier this month, the "Get To Know Us Before You Need Us" program for those in the military was presented at the local National Guard Unit, 1165th MP Company. One of the programs your local chapter is responsible is that of Armed Forces Emergency Services (AFES). We gladly take, verify and send or receive messages between families and their military members in various situations. This briefing is done at least once each year. Representatives of the local chapter, Becky McCreary and myself, handed out packets of information and spoke regarding the responsibilities of the chapter and the information we need to assist the military person and their families.
Call 867-3426 for information regarding the services to military persons or their families, other general chapter information or to request a speaker for your group. Volunteers are welcome too.
