At press time, Hurricane Ivan had not yet brought its destructive 140-mile per hour winds into the Gulf of Mexico, and its path was projected to climb the state of Florida and into Georgia early next week, just bypassing this area.
But as anyone who has experienced a hurricane knows, that path can chenge significantly as the storm moves.
Rogene Martin, Director of East Escambia Chapter of the Red Cross, says that the Red Cross is prepared to open shelters in the event that Ivan -- or a subsequent storm -- hits this area.
Martin said that supplies are on hand and food is available so that if a call were received, a shelter could be open within 30 minutes.
