The debris will start to disappear soon.
County administrator Tony Sanks said Friday that Escambia County and its municipalities have entered into a verbal agreement with the Army Corps of Engineers for the management of debris removal.
Sanks said the Corps will contract with a private company for the debris removal. It's his understanding, he said, that the actual debris removal company will have knuckleboom loaders allowing them to reach out from the trucks and pick up large pieces of debris.
He said if the contractors are not able to reach all of the debris piled at the street, residents are asked to move what is left into the right-of-way after the first debris is removed. The trucks will make a second pass if necessary, he said.
Priority will be given to school areas and around hospitals, Sanks said.
On Friday, the Corps was still in the process of locating sites in each of the three zones of the county – east, central and west – to which to haul the debris.
Residents are asked to keep construction debris separate from organic material like trees if possible.
The projected cost of debris removal in Escambia County is $16.2 million.
