Students at J.F. Drake Middle School in Auburn, Ala., understand the gift of giving.
After hurricane Ivan took its toll on south Alabama, the student council at Drake Middle School decided to respond.
A Penny War was declared among the entire student body. During their lunch waves, each team collected pennies and paper bills to add points to their total amount of money.
At the same time, silver coins were placed in other teams' jugs to deduct points from that particular team. In the end, the students collected a total amount of $2,700.
One of the teachers at Drake Middle School, Ashley Goolsby McInnish, is a former resident of East Brewton. McInnish, along with teachers Chandra Garlington-Hughes, Wayne Strickland, Jara Walden and student council advisor Duriel Barlow, decided to donate all of the money to the city of East Brewton.
Mayor Terry Clark visited Drake Middle School to receive the check and help the winning team celebrate at an ice cream party.
