Principal resigns, inquiry ongoing

The Escambia County Board of Education Tuesday accepted the resignation of a principal who has been placed on administrative leave.
Escambia County High School principal Jerry Smith's resignation is effective July 1, but Superintendent Buck Powell said he has placed Smith on leave and named assistant principal Kyle Ferguson acting principal.
The action came after an hour-long closed session in special meeting Tuesday afternoon.
Board attorney Broox Garrett said neither the board nor its attorney would make further comments until an inveestigation into fiscal problems is completed.
