We are continually amazed by the work of the Humane Society of Escambia County, and even more astounded that there are those in this world cruel enough to make their work necessary.
Witness the story in Sunday's edition of The Brewton Standard, reporting that a Humane Society investigation led to the freedom of 50 animals trapped in an abandoned mobile home where there was no electricty and precious little water or ventilation. The smell was so horrible that Humane Society investigators had to don the haz-mat gear normally reserved for Drug Task Force officers who are potentially breathing toxins when investigating methamphetamine labs.
The Humane Society found eight small breed dogs, a full-grown prairie dog, 31 exotic birds and 14 chicken cages stacked on top of each other.
While the investigation has not yet led to arrests and a motive has not been determined, investigators have speculated that those who placed the animals in the mobile home intended to sell them. Even if no arrests are made, the efforst of the Humane Society rescued innocent animals from a tortuous conditions and possible deaths.
We salute them for the good they do in our community.
