A crowd of former employees, students and longtime supportors turned out Tuesday afternoon to help Jefferson Davis Community College mark its 40th anniversary.
The college's first classes began in September, 1965, and were held in the First United Methodist Church of Brewton while the campus was under construction.
Tedder said his father and brothers had planned to help each other attend college.
That made a local college all-the-more important in his father's eyes, he said.
Among those recognized in the crowd were Catherine Finlay Fountain, who was among the first JDCC students; Sally Finlay, whose family has supported the college since then-Pollard Mayor Curtis Finlay served on the original junior college committee; Sen. Pat Lindsey who, McBride said, "has been so supportive of this college;" Mayor Howard Shell of Atmore; Mayor Ted Jennings of Brewton; and former JDCC student Bernice Sims, a Brewton artist and renowned folk artist whose work recently was chosen for use on a U.S. postage stamp.
