Acting on a tip, Brewton police arrested a juvenile this week in connection with an October incident involving a Pizza Pro deliveryman who was robbed at gunpoint.
Brewton Police Chief Monte McGougin said Friday afternoon that the suspect is 16-years-old. His name could not be released due to his juvenile status.
In October, at approximately 9:50 p.m., Jerry Smothers, 31, who works for Pizza Pro, was making a routine delivery to a repeat customer on Bryant Circle.
According to police reports, after Smothers made his delivery he got into his car and drove away. Smothers told officers that four black men surrounded his car. He rolled down his window and one of the suspects placed a gun under his chin and demanded him to hand over the money, his cell phone and wallet.
The juvenile was arrested Tuesday night and was transferred to a Bay Minette Youth Detention Center. As of Friday, the juvenile was still in the detention center, but was expected to be transferred from juvenile status to adult status due to the violent nature of the crime. McGougin said that once the transfer is complete, he will be brought back to the Escambia County Detention Center.
The juvenile was charged with robbery, first degree, which is a Class A felony. McGougin said police are still searching for the other suspects and no other arrests have been made.
