If the city of Brewton gets a new middle school, McKee and Associates will be the architects for the job.
The City Board of Education voted to include future projects with its architectural contract with McKee and Associates Thursday evening. According to Superintendent Lynn Smith, the contract will include a scope of work such as kindergarten renovations, the design of a middle school and any work or renovations at T.R. Miller High School.
The larger the project the cheaper the board's cost percentage wise, Smith said. He added that a site has not been chosen for the new middle school.
According to board chairman Stephanie Walker, the purpose of the inclusions was so McKee and Associates could better prepare for future projects.
Already in the works is the renovation of the kindergarten building. Smith said that he hopes to have the renovations, which is still a work in progress, completed by August. The renovations would include vacating the back four classrooms and creating seven new classrooms, including a special education class. Details would also include dividing the auditorium into a classroom and meeting room. Smith said he hopes to send out bids in January of 2006 and open the bids in February. The plans must be approved by the state, he said.
Board members accepted the resignations of Amy Morgan, Brewton Elementary School Title I teacher, and Joy Miller, T.R. Miller High School family and consumer science teacher. The board also approved the transfer of Clara White. She will be moving from Brewton Middle School fifth and sixth grade teacher to Brewton Elementary School Title I teacher.
