Battle on field, not in the stands
The biggest battle in town has nothing to do with the upcoming elections - it's the annual Battle of Murder Creek set for Friday night at T.R. Miller's stadium.
The rivalry between W.S. Neal and T.R. Miller dates back 60 years -but it's probably safe to say that it has sometimes been less than friendly.
Fans of the teams have sometimes taken things too far, engaging in vandalism and mischief in the days leading up to the big game.
But we would all do well to remember just how this football game series began - as a charity effort that helped raise money for the hospital and brought the community together.
So this year, we can expect to see a good game, but we also expect that the biggest battle will stay on the field - not in the stands or in the streets before and after.
We need to keep our rivalry safe and civil and remember that in the end we are all friends and neighbors.
We are privileged to live in a community with such great school spirit for both Neal and Miller. Our small towns support their schools not only by cheering on the sidelines and wearing blue or red but also by volunteering with students and by giving their time to the schools.
The Battle of Murder Creek is an opportunity for both towns to cheer for their respective teams - but it's also an opportunity for all of us to remember that we are two cities, but we are really one community.
